The midweek race series sponsored by Full Throttle energy drink wrapped last week and a bunch of teammates ended up on the final series podium.  This series is unlike any other series in the state in that racers earn cold hard cash for final podium placements.  Based on our results I'm sure we're the best paid team in the state!

Pro/Expert Men A

  • Shannon Boffeli   2nd  ($375)
  • Jon Rose            3rd  ($275)
  • Ryan Ashbridge    4th  ($100)

Pro/Expert Women

  • Jen Hanks        2nd ($375)

Jay Burke has run this series since it's inception 4 years ago and has done an amazing job building the greatest midweek series in the state.  Due to time constraints he is stepping down from the series and Riley Siddoway of Mountain Race Works is taking over.  Riley hopes to continue the series in some form next year and is open to feedback about the current series.  Please take a few minutes do drop him an email letting him know how much you love the series and hope it continues next season.  His email is:    This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Four of us on the ride are getting ready for the 24 Hours of Moab race in October.  Gotta get those lights dialed in and get comfortable riding at night.  Snacks and beverages provided by Jim and Karl after the ride.

ICUP #13

2nd Annual Rock the Canyons XC Race

By Erika Powers

The final ICUP course was completely different from last year.  First it was running in the opposite direction and then there was an added up and back road climb that most people pre-rode.  The morning of race day Ed decided to remove the two-way road climb for safety reasons which shortened the lap distance, but he did not change the number of laps.  Some people where glad the road climb was removed and the course was shorter (like me) and some people would have preferred the road climb and longer race (like Bob).  Most racers completed in less than 1.5hr which was quite a bit shorter than last weeks race.

Butte 100/50 PDF Print E-mail

After the Laramie Enduro registration debacle a large group of teammates made the decsion to move on to other endurance challanges.  The Butte 100/50 was on the same day day and about the same distance away so it fit the bill quite well.

The pure crazies among us decided to do the 100 mile version which promised (and delivered) a whopping 18,000 feet of climbing.  With most of the climbing being on trails instead of roads I do believe that the Butte 100 is one of the toughest one day races in the entire world....no B.S.  In fact less than half of the starters finished, it took super stallion Ryan Ashbridge almost 12 hours to complete and world renown Tinker Jaurez said it was the hardest race he has ever done.

The 50 mile version was still difficult but much more reasonable.  The course was just under 50 miles with 9000 feet of climbing.  It was almost all trail with a couple short sections of dirt road to connect the trails.  The trails were an excellent mix of a little bit of firm and fun ATV trail and a lot of sweet singletrack.  In fact the last 15 miles of the race were on a buff section of the Contintal Divide Trail that was some of the coolest trail I have ever ridden.

The Butte 100/50 is still in it's infancy and is experiencing some growing pains.  Late in the race the aid stations ran out of some key supplies which wasn't a huge deal since most racers bring their own.  The early part of the 50 mile race had some troubles with course markings.  Right near the beginning a group of us missed a confusing turn at the base of a fast downhill which added a couple miles to the race.  A little later a huge group of racers (including Travis and Rhonda) missed a poorly marked turn off the main trail onto a side trail resulting in a 5 mile, 1000ft detour.  By the time the 100 mile racers came through almost everything had been straightened out and very few of them made wrong turns.

Having done both Butte and Laramie I can honestly say I prefer Butte.  The quality of trail, the difficulty of the race and the amazing scenery of the Butte course more than make up for the snafu's in the organization of the race.  The promoters of the race promise that next year will be better so if you're looking for a challange keep this race in mind.

  • Ryan Ashbridge   9th
  • Ty Hanson          17th
  • Drew Free          18th
